Reeling in Joy: Hatchery Brings Fishing Fun to Nursing Home Residents

Written By

Residents at Summit Manor Rehabilitation and Wellness Center in Columbia, KY enjoyed a special outdoor experience recently, thanks to a visit from Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery.

Joel LaRue, a maintenance worker at the hatchery, delivered a truckload of rainbow trout to the facility, setting the stage for a relaxing day of fishing. He was joined by volunteers Rick and Diane Cox, who helped transport supplies, and Charmaine Stewart, Vice President of Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, who also assisted with the event.

Fishing offers a variety of benefits for seniors—including opportunities for social connection, improved mental health, and gentle physical activity. Along with catching fish, many residents shared stories and memories from their own fishing adventures.

It was a day filled with laughter, nostalgia, and community spirit—and a great example of how simple outdoor activities can bring joy and enrichment to the lives of older adults. We're proud to support events like this that make a difference in our local community.
